I'm going to tell you about a golden age of custom maps, the days before
tf2, the days before half-life 2.
No, I am not going to talk about the serious custom maps, but rather, I want to talk about the random fun maps that rarely had a purpose, aside from some secret finding maps like secretcity. The maps that made you say lol wtf, the maps that you loved running around in just doing nothing but enjoying what was there, the maps that had so many colors and random pictures and whatnot that it would make a colorblind person cry.
During my days of Team fortress classic and svencoop thats where it was the best.
During my TFC days i spent a lot of time on custom maps, they were pretty awesome. freakle3, some adventure maps that DID serve a purpose, but were still fun as hell, not as random, but fun none the less. I don't remember the names of a lot of the maps unfortunatly, which really bums me out lol.
Svencoop was where it was great, i spent a lot of time on a snark cafe server where the server was nothing BUT custom maps, they were damn fun too. Thats where i spent most of my time, i am not sure why I stopped playing though. I sure miss it.
But, these days seem over. I say this because with the new
hl2 engine and whatnot everything is too real and whatnot to make anything look crazy or cooky. Not only that, but it seems more limited then the hl1 map maker.
