Default Do people still build their own computers?

I'm thinking of finally getting a new computer (mine is about 5 years old, tho its been through upgrades). I've always been a build-my-own kind of guy, but it seems the price-points have dropped so much that building your own costs more.

Thats not really true...you just need to keep a look out for good deals on parts. My uncle just built a computer for about 50% less than he would have spent otherwise. Also, I think I 'm going to be build one in the near future.

With that said...there are also great deals on pre-built computers. I guess it all boils down to finding the best deal and whether or not you feel like actually putting one together.

I built mine and it saved like a grand overall. I think it makes more of a difference if you're looking for top of the line stuff, and also if you have special requirements (silent drives, watercooling, etc) where you'll easily save money doing it yourself. My only real requirement was I wanted a motherboard that had 6 onboard sata slots because I have so much shiz on my computer. I've definitely learned a lot that I'll put into my next big purchase in a couple years.

Oh and I use Newegg/TigerDirect/ZipZoomFly for the most part.

I use to build all my previous systems but in 2003 i decided to get a dell because i got tired of spending money on the latest and greatest. Then in late 2006 i decided to build my latest system.

Thanks for the input. I want a sorta kickass gaming system, but I'm not looking to spend a gagillion dollars. Games are mostly GPU-oriented, so thats the best bang for the buck to spend... but it still seemd hard to not spend $2,000 on something that will be worth $800 in a year!

Yea, I regret not building mine, I bought it 2 years ago, and I had no clue what I was getting... I ended up getting a computer with Laptop's video card.

I'd say if you know what you're doing you can lean either way. Put together the amounts of both options, and take the best choice.
